*In compliance with the vote in the Student Senate requesting instructors to give a warning to students regarding “trigger” topics, notice is given here that this class may contain material that make mention of/raise issues of sex, race, violence, gender, sexuality, and/or disability. While course materials are not focused specifically on any of these issues (they are not a “theme” for the course), these topics will most likely come up in discussion.

ATTENTION! EARLY DROP DEADLINE: October 8

Writing 50 is for Sophomores only.  You are NOT required to take Writing 50.  As of 2010, any Writing 105/107/109 course will fulfill the second part of the UC Area A Requirement, which is the requirement that Writing 50 also fulfills.

Writing 50 is often more work-intensive than many upper-division courses, because it is about writing and university research. According to university guidelines, the course is inappropriate for Freshmen, Juniors, or Seniors.  Unless you are genuinely interested in researching, and/or already have an area of inquiry in which you have an interest, I suggest you look to the over 25+ courses available to you that fulfill this requirement. If you choose to take this course, please be prepared to commit to engagement with university-level research and writing activities.

“Research is formalized curiosity. It is poking and prying with a purpose.”                                         -Zora Neale Hurston

“If we knew what we were doing, it wouldn’t be called research”                                             -Albert Einstein
